Marie a Melbourne :)): Journee a Hanoi - Marie au Vietnam S01E08 (24/04/2010)

Debout a 6h du mat, je me suis prepare un petit plan pour ma journee de repos de la semaine (puisque je bosse demain dimanche.....). Depart un peu avant 9h :)
Awake at 6am as usual, I prepared a plan for my only day off of the week (as I'll be working the following day on a Sunday...). And I'm off a bit before 9am :)

Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum:
Ca se complique, pas droit aux bouteilles d'eau, pas le droit aux appareils photos, et une queue de folie mais ca va assez vite. C'est le meme principe que Lenine a Moscou quoi, silence, on a pas le droit de s'arreter et on peut donc voir Ho Chi Minh mort...
Same concept as Lenine in Moscow really....

Ho Chi Minh's Stilt House and the Presidential Palace:
Wikipedia dit (un peu de culture qd meme!): Le Palace Presidentiel a ete construit entre 1900 et 1906 pour accueillir le gouverneur general Francais d'Indochine. Lorsque le Vietnam est devenu independant en 1954, Ho Chi Minh a refuse de vivre au palais et il a fait construire une maison sur pilotis, typiquement Vietnamienne.
Comme vous allez le voir sur les photos il y avait enormement de monde! Il fallait suivre la queue depuis l'entree jusqu'a la sortie!
Wikipedia says: The Presidential Palace of Vietnam was built between 1900 and 1906 to house the French Governor-General of Indochina. When Vietnam achieved independence in 1954, Ho Chi Minh refused to live in the grand structure for symbolic reasons, he eventually built a traditional Vietnamese stilt house and carp pond on the grounds.
It was really busy there, I had to follow the queue from the entrance until the exit! You'll be bale to see it on the pictures.

One Pillar Pagoda:
La pagode de Chua Môt Côt a été construite par l'empereur Lý Thái Tông, qui régna de 1028 à 1054. Elle fut reconstruite au XIIIe siècle, détruite par les Français au XXe siècle et reconstruite par le nouveau gouvernement vietnamien. A l'origine elle était au centre d'un ensemble de pagodes, elle était plus grande et son pilier était en bois de teck et non en béton comme actuellement.
The temple was built by Emperor Lý Thái Tông, who ruled from 1028 to 1054. In 1954, the French Union forces destroyed the pagoda before withdrawing from Vietnam after the First Indochina War, it was rebuilt afterwards.
Yes, I'm ashamed....

Ho Chi Minh's Museum:
Musee dedie a Ho Chi Minh et aux revolutionnaires Vietnamiens. Il a ete construit dans les annees 1990.
It is a museum dedicated to Ho Chi Minh and Vietnam's revolutionary struggle against foreign powers. It was constructed in the 1990's.

C'est dans ce temple qu'a ete etablie la premiere universite du Vietnam en 1076. Elle a fonctionne pendant plus de 700 ans. A partir de 1484 le nom des laureats ont ete graves sur des steles placees au dessus de status de tortues.
Ce temple etait magnifique et tellement serin. On ne pouvait quasiment pas entendre les bruits de la ville meme s'il est en plein centre. (Ici les gens conduisent au klaxon....)
In 1076 Vietnam's first university was established within the temple to educate Vietnam's bureaucrats, nobles, royalty and other members of the elite. The university functioned for more than 700 years, from 1076 to 1779. Emperor Lê Thánh Tông established the tradition, dating back to 1484, of carving the names of the laureates of the university on stone steles that were placed on top of stone tortoises. Of the 116 steles corresponding to the examinations held between 1142 and 1778, only 82 remain.
I really enjoyed this temple, it was really nice and so quiete even though it's in the city center.

Je voulais trop gouter ces trucs dans les feuiles de bananes, je crois que c'est une espece de pate de riz fourree a la viande... Mais vraiment j'avais plus la place.
I sooo wanted to try those banana leaves thingies... I think it's rice paste stuffed with meat.. I had no more space in my belly though....

Have a look at the sale girl on the right of the window.

Mini allee trop sympa avec que des restos ou des vendeurs de desserts. Vous remarquerez a quel point c'est etroit et pourtant les locaux n'hesitent pas a y passer en moto....
Really cute aisle with food and deserts stands. It was really narrow but the locals still drive their bikes there!

Anecdote: un couple s'est assis pres de moi pendant ma degustation. Il etait francais et elle vietnamienne. La vendeuse leur a demande de traduire pour elle; elle voulait savoir quel age j'avais et etait toute triste que je ne sois pas mariee.

Anecdote: A couple sat next to me while I was eating, a French guy and a Vietnamese girl. The seller girl asked them to translate for us: she wanted to know how old I was and got all worried that I was so nice and stuff and still not married!

Dong Xuan Market:
Batti par les Francais en 1889, Dong Xuan Market est le plus grand marche couvert d'Hanoi, on y trouve de tout; habits, chaussures, nourriture, articles pour la maison, etc.
Originally built by the French administration in 1889, Dong Xuan Market has been renovated several times with the latest in 1994 after a fire which almost destroyed the market. Nowadays, Dong Xuan Market is the largest covered market of Hanoi where the wholesale traders sell everything from clothes, household goods to foodstuffs.

Le lac Hoan Kiem est au centre d'Hanoi. Sur l'ile Jade Island se trouve le temple Ngoc Son.
Hoan Kiem Lake (or "Lake of the Restored Sword") is a lake in the historical center of Hanoi. Near the northern shore of the lake lies Jade Island on which the Ngoc Son Temple (Jade Mountain Temple) stands.
Huc Bridge:
Jade Island, sur le lac Hoan Kiem, est reliee a la ville par le pont en bois Huc Bridge.
Jade Island, on the Hoan Kiem Lake, is connected to the shore by the wooden red-painted Huc Bridge (The Huc, meaning Morning Sunlight Bridge).

Thap Rua:
Temple construit sur une autre minuscule ile du lac au XVIIeme siecle.
Temple built during the 17th century on a different tiny island of the lake.

Ngoc Son Temple:
Temple construit au XVIIIeme siecle en l'honneur de Tran Hung Dao un leader de l'armee qui s'est distingue lors de la bataille contre la Dinastie Yuan.
The temple was erected in the 18th century. It honors the 13-century military leader Tran Hung Dao who distinguished himself in the fight against the Yuan Dynasty.

Built to honour all the ones who died fighting for Vietnam's independance.

Water Puppets:
Le Mua rôi nuoc est un theatre de marionnette vietnamien traditionnel ou l'action et la manipulation ont lieu sur et dans un bassin. C'est une tradition qui date du XIeme siecle. Les marionnettes sont en bois et sont ensuite lacquees. Lorsque les champs de riz etaient sous l'eau les villageois avaient l'habitude d'y faire des spectacles de marionnettes.
Water puppetry is a tradition that dates back as far as the 11th century CE when it originated in the villages of the Red River Delta area of northern Vietnam. Today's Vietnamese water puppetry is a unique variation on the ancient Asian puppet tradition. The puppets are made out of wood and then lacquered. The shows are performed in a waist-deep pool. A large rod supports the puppet under the water and is used by the puppeteers, who are normally hidden behind a screen, to control them. Thus the puppets appear to be moving over the water. When the rice fields would flood, the villagers would entertain each other using this form of puppet play.

Hotel....
Il est 19h30 lorsque je rentre a l'hotel... Je suis supra fatiguee!!!!
Super journee, j'ai vu a peu pres tout ce que voulais a Hanoi, j'ai goute des bonnes choses, je me suis balladee un peu au hasard et c'est vraiment ce que je prefere faire pour decouvrir la ville et la culture....
Back at the hotel at 7:30pm, I am sooooo tired... I did heaps, I'm really happy of my day! Loved walking around randomly in the city.

Night out:
A 20h, depart pour aller diner avec Dinesh et Julien a Quan An Ngon un restau typique juste a cote de l'hotel.
C'etait pas mauvais mais je pense que j'ai pas fait un super choix de plat....
Left the hotel at 8pm to go for dinner at Quan An Ngon with Julien and Dinesh. It's supposed to be a really authentic Vietnamese restaurant, it wasn't too bad but I think I didn't pick the right dish...
